1. Mahie Gill
Mahie Gill was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her role in ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’ for her powerful performance as a lovelorn Begum of a royal Nawab. Deprived of love and lust, she takes her driver to bed and gets him killed when he starts proving to be a liability. You can’t get more femme fatale than that.
2. Kalki Koechlin
Even though Kalki was not really the bad guy (or girl) in the supernatural thriller movie ‘Ek Thi Daayan’, this was only revealed towards the end. In the meanwhile, the feeling of foreboding that she managed to emanate throughout the movie from the time of her appearance to the climax is definitely villain-worthy.
3. Konkona Sen Sharma
The actual ‘daayan’ of the movie was Konkona Sen Sharma – and although the movie was not one of the best this year, Konkona Sen Sharma sent right shivers up the audience’s spine as a witch disguised in a khadi sari-clad mysterious woman with kohl-lined eyes. Evil as they come!
4. Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra plays a powerful, successful boss-lady who seduces her office junior with who she has a history – and tries all sorts of tricks to get him back, in ‘Aitraaz’. And she fits the bill perfectly as the sultry seductress. Her villainous performance had won her a number of awards and much praise from critics as well as audiences.
5. Bipasha Basu
While we are talking about ambitious seductresses, let’s not forget the sizzling Bipasha Basu is the cult hit 2003 movie ‘Jism’. The movie established Bipasha even more firmly in her Bollywood career, earning the actress her first nomination for a negative role.
6. Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan is easily one of the best actresses in the industry today. Her talent in embodying the subtle nuances of her characters makes her one of the most sought after actresses. And ‘Ishqiya’ is one example, where her manipulative character of a small-town passionate widow Krishna Verma won her accolades and fans.
This list is incomplete without the very first woman to make the Filmfare list of actors commended for their negative role. She was brilliant as the psychopathic killer in ‘Gupt’ – one of the best films of 1997. They just don’t make them like that anymore.
8. Urmila Matondkar
Urmila Matondkar’s heydays are long gone – but she was probably one of the most underrated actresses in the industry. Her acting in ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’ was nothing short of brilliant – an obsessed, jealous mistress who turns stalker.
9. Amrita Singh
In ‘Kalyug’, we saw Amrita Singh as a porn baron – a villain category that has been unsurpassed among Bollywood actresses as yet. In a movie that deals with the other side of the sex market, Amrita Singh is very convincing as a powerful businesswoman without moral qualms.
10. Preity Zinta
It is difficult to dredge through memory lane to bring back the 2003 flop movie ‘Armaan’ to mind. However, if dredge you can, you will remember that among other big names in the star cast – like Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, there was Preity Zinta as well. And she stole the limelight with her schizophrenic character – and thus a nomination for best villain that year.
Ambitious, obsessed or just plain crazy – these women, who are otherwise the nice and virtuous ladies of cinema, play the evil side with equal finesse. Besides, it is a hallmark of the talented actress to foray into diverse roles like that of the villain.
